We can make progress on SOMPA (Southern Ocean Marine Protected Areas) this year. After Montreal and New York opening the way for the 30 x 30 target with the support of China, we can use the CCAMLR meeting in Santiago in June to win them to our cause. We can invite them to take part in scientific missions in the proposed MPA and encourage them to propose their own area for protection. We should also address the root causes of resistance to protection worldwide, namely the appetite for krill. Alternatives exist. They must be better known and promoted.
